API Drifts

Drifts are used regularly in a variety of industries for testing pipes, casing, tubing, and valves for roundness, straightness, burrs and other defects.  Drifting is a process in which a closely tolerance drift or pig is passed through the pipe, or tubular that will go through smoothly only when the internal tolerances are proper and without friction or heavy resistance.

The method of testing tubulars like pipe and casing is a simple method of inserting a lightweight cylindrical drift into one end of a section of pipe. The cylindrical drift should have a circumference within close tolerance of the internal pipe diameter and have a friction free outer surface structure for contacting the inner pipe wall.  Once inserted into tubular operators can then pass the drift through the section of pipe with either air, fluid or pull via drift tape moving the cylindrical drift through the section of pipe being tested.  It should be able to pass through from one end to the other without issue would indicate whether the pipe is within specified tolerance without indentations, being out-of-roundness, bends or burrs.

Industrial Screen and Maintenance is the original Polyurethane API Pipe Drift manufacturer.  Company founder, Robert (Pete) Miner patented the design in 1980.  Since then we’ve been manufacturing and improving the drift design shipping to clients around the globe.

ISM manufactures a wide assortment of drifts that include; API Pipe Drifts, API Casing Drifts, and API Valve Drifts. These drifts can be ordered from a variety of materials; steel, aluminum, Teflon, UHMW or our preferred material Cast Urethane

API, American Petroleum Institute is the governing body that develops standards for the Oil and Gas Industry.  Our API Drifts are manufactured to meet all API Specifications, ensuring our customers get a quality product for each and every order.
